HANDS THAT CREATE
Isabela Ferreira
An independent artist since 2017, Isabela learned the technique from her mother.
"I find it interesting that macramé came to me as an alternative therapy. I remember a time in my life when I was going through emotional problems and couldn't do simple everyday tasks like going to school. I stayed at home and felt very idle. Until one afternoon my mother sat down next to me and showed me some macramé stitches she knew so that I could distract myself in the meantime.
It worked out!
I still remember my first necklace (a string and a stone hanging any which way) and how proud I was.
Since then I have delved deeper and deeper into "macramistic" studies and techniques -smiles-
Today I make this art my work."
In 2017 the company "Pedra Luz" was born.
MACRAMÉ & HISTORY
Macramé is a type of manual weaving, where all you need is your hands and the material/thread you choose to weave something. This art originated in prehistoric times, when the first human communities began to develop ways to keep warm, and protect or store their food. The threads discovered at that time were made with plant fibers (cotton, hemp, jute, sisal or linen) and animal fibers (wool) and ended up giving rise to spinning processes and various weaving techniques (macramé, knitting, crochet).
Like all ancient wisdom, there are several versions of its origin. There are very old records in Turkey, China and Egypt, but it seems that the technique was prominent among the medieval Arabs. What no one has any doubt about is that it was spread by sailors, who used their long voyages to create new knots and make products (shawls, belts, bags, fishing utensils, etc.) both for personal use and for sale and exchange in the ports of the cities where they stopped.
Macramé arrived in Brazil through Portuguese colonizers and for this reason, some people have heard it called “bróia” or “brolha”, as the technique was nicknamed in Portugal.
